About Coaxials and Components

If you’ve been curious about car stereo systems, there is a good chance you’ve come across the words “coaxial” and “component”. Coaxial speakers and component speakers are two common systems that can be part of your car stereo system. In fact, many vehicles use either coaxial speakers or separately mounted drivers as part of their factory audio system, meaning your car may already use a similar configuration. But what are coaxial and component speakers? And why should you upgrade your car stereo?

Car audio can be confusing, so before we go any further, let’s first explain what drivers are. In audio, drivers are individual speakers designed to reproduce specific frequency ranges, such as high, midrange, or low frequencies. With car audio systems, the most common speaker styles are tweeters (high) and woofers (low); some setups include an additional speaker for mid-range sounds and woofers (low).

Coaxial speakers combine multiple drivers along the same axis, typically with the tweeter mounted in the center or above the woofer. These speakers are commonly available in 2-way and 3-way configurations, with each design using multiple drivers to reproduce different frequency ranges. One driver can provide low and mid sounds; two drivers divide between a woofer and tweeter; three drivers divide between woofer, mid-range, and tweeter. Aftermarket coaxial speakers are a popular option for upgrading factory audio systems because they can improve sound performance while remaining relatively straightforward to install. They are ideal for those who want to improve their audio setup without too much fuss.

Component speakers consist of individual drivers that are installed separately. A component speaker system uses separately mounted drivers, typically a woofer or midbass driver and a tweeter, while 3-way systems add a dedicated midrange driver. Component speaker systems use crossover filtering to divide the audio signal and direct the appropriate frequency ranges to each driver. Component speakers are more complicated to install, but give you a better sound experience over coaxial speakers. Using separate drivers gives installers greater flexibility with speaker placement and can improve clarity, imaging, and soundstage when the system is properly installed and tuned. So if you don’t mind being more involved, and value high-fidelity audio above all else, component speakers will work for you and your car stereo.
