The Significance of the Volkswagen Golf
J Balvin's journey to stardom began with a humble 1997 Volkswagen Golf. At 17, he spotted an ad for this used car in a local newspaper, seeing it as the key to realizing his dreams of touring Colombia to perform reggaeton and sell CDs. Despite financial constraints, Balvin's father recognized his son's passion and helped him acquire the vehicle, which became fondly known as "Rayo."
“It reminded me of my beginnings — a time when I made music just for my family. During that time, Rayo was the name of my car and we paved a road that didn’t exist yet.” said Balvin in an interview.

Mix Up Car Audio went above and beyond with the custom fabrication and installation of these components. The slim yet powerful DS18 PRO-NEO6SLIM 6.5" Mid-Range Loudspeakers fit perfectly: the Volkswagen Golf ‘97, known for its limited door and panel space, required a speaker that could deliver big power in a small package—and the PRO-NEO6SLIM was designed just for that.
To take things to the next level, the DS18 EXL-X15.2D was installed, unleashing 2,500W of ground-shaking power to deliver deep, booming bass that gives RAYO its signature punch. Known for handling ultra-low frequencies with precision, this 15” sub was the perfect match for J Balvin’s reggaeton beats—bringing out every bass drop with power that hits you in the chest. The EXL-X15.2D fit seamlessly into RAYO’s build, and were installed with the double stacked magnets facing outward so all the boom was felt throughout the vehicle.
To add an extra layer of high-frequency clarity, Mix Up Car Audio integrated DS18’s PRO-TWX3 4" Super Bullet Tweeters and the PRO-TWN4 High Compression Tweeters—both designed to handle demanding audio environments. The PRO-TWX3 projected every whisper and high note with precision, making it the perfect match for RAYO’s intense sound system. The PRO-TWN4 pushed J Balvin’s vocals to the forefront, delivering pristine clarity and insane volume even at lower power levels. Together, these tweeters created a powerful high-frequency combo that ensured every detail of Balvin’s tracks was heard loud and clear.

To drive this powerhouse setup, the FX1 Class-D Amplifier was chosen for its high-quality sound and compact design. it pushed the subwoofers to deliver crystal-clear bass at all volumes. Its unique flush or surface-mount adapter made it a perfect fit for RAYO’s custom setup, offering flexibility without sacrificing power or space. The built-in digital LEDs added a sleek touch to the interior, enhancing RAYO’s high-tech aesthetic.
To ensure the mids and highs kept up with the powerful lows, the FX4 4-Channel Amplifier was added, boosting the overall performance with 3000W of max power and the same versatile mounting options. This amp’s advanced Class-D circuit design and selectable crossovers allowed for precise tuning, while its rugged IP65 water-resistant coating ensured durability even under the toughest conditions. Together, the FX1 and FX4 amps provided unmatched flexibility and power, making RAYO’s system sound as fierce as it looks.
